zion national park
I made this as part of my student portfolio. I still think it has a lot of heart and soul.
Basically—people who would benefit from visiting a national park are often the least likely to go. Think busy New Yorkers, tech workers, and workaholics.
So if that’s the case, let’s bring the park to them. Let’s show and not tell. Through poetry and technology.
We’d run these in all the places where our target audience puts their attention. Business magazines, news website, anything related to The Economist. You know. Where they’d stand out.
hike zion in the middle of manhattan
By using AR technology built into strategically placed vantage points (as well as an immersive mobile experience), we could let people go on a hike in the middle of New York.
Each of the additional locations would be strategically placed to target people on their commutes or in corporate/business areas.
To literally put the park inside a city setting, we’d create vantage points that reside at high trafficked areas. There would be a map with a “you are here” designation and a pair of binoculars, thus showing that there’s more than one location and that people should go see the other points.
These “viewing stations” could be outside, or could also be in strange, nonsensical places. Why would there be a binocular machine in an underground subway?
the hike in between
However, if you wanted to travel from location to location and still “stay in the park,” you could scan the map to upload a web app that would show another 360 video of the trail between points. Thus creating a fully immersive experience that literally places a hike inside of a major metro area.
Everyone’s seen pictures of National Parks. That’s expected. So instead, we try to express the soul of the park. Something abstract, deep and ineffable.
